Are You Flood Smart?

Are You Flood Smart?

In the Grand Canyon State, flood season lasts from early April to late September. During this time, flooding is more likely, although it could occur any time of year. While the town of Boulder is considered to have the highest risk of fatalities during flooding, residents of all cities are in danger. Preparing for this type of severe weather should include more than bolstering your current home insurance Colorado policy with flood coverage from FEMA. You should also arm yourself with the knowledge of what to do during a flood.

• You should move to the highest level possible as soon as you are aware of the danger. The roof should be considered your last resort.
• Do not touch floodwaters unless absolutely necessary. Floodwaters often contain hazardous materials, such as raw sewage.
• Do not try to drive through flooded roads. Your car could be swept away by the current in less than two feet of water.
• When water is more than ankle deep, do not walk through it and be aware that walking through murky water leaves you at risk of stepping on broken glass or other sharp items.
• Avoid power lines and electric wiring during and after a flood.
• Turning off both electrical and gas utility connectors is a smart idea for those who have ample warning of the potential for flooding.
